Abia Governorship: INEC Confirms Receiving Ikpeazu’s Appeal

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has admitted receiving a notice of appeal from the Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.
The commission, however, said that the documents it received did not contain a stay-of-execution order, to stop the issuance of a certificate of return to Sampson Ogah as the next governor of the state.
The electoral body had on Thursday issued a certificate of return to Mr. Ogah as directed by a federal high court in Abuja on Monday.
Justice Abang Okon had ruled that Mr. Ikpeazu submitted fraudulent tax documents when he filed papers to run for governorship ticket on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Mr. Ogah was Mr Ikpeazu’s main challenger in the gubernatorial primaries conducted in December 2014, and had asked the court to nullify Mr. Ikpeazu’s candidacy on the basis of the tax default.
Mr Ikpeazu says he has appealed the ruling, and that he remains Governor.
On Thursday, INEC said it issued a certificate of return to Mr Ogah because it had not been served Mr. Ikpeazu’s notice of appeal.
The electoral body through its spokesman Nick Dazang, on Friday however explained that Mr Ikpeazu’s failure to provide a stay-of-execution order left the commission with no choice than to issue the certificate of return to Mr Ogah.

Ikpeazu Insists He Remains Abia State Governor

okezie ikpeazu, Abia
The embattled Governor of Abia State, Mr Okezie Ikpeazu, on Friday says he remains the legitimate governor of the state.
Speaking at the Government House in Umuahia, the Abia State’s capital in southwest Nigeria, the Governor called for calm and support from all residents in the state.
He said that the constitution gave him the right to appeal the case and expressed surprise at what he describes at INEC’s rush to issue a certificate of return to Mr Uche Ogah.
Mr Ikpeazu also expressed confidence that the judiciary would do the needful.
He dismissed the rumors that the Federal Government had a hand in the case.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) admitted receiving a notice of appeal from Mr Okezie.
The commission, however, said that the documents it received did not contain a stay-of-execution order to stop the issuance of a Certificate of Return to Mr Sampson Ogah as the next Governor of Abia State.

The electoral body had on Thursday issued a Certificate of Return to Mr Ogah in line with the directives of a Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday.

Ambode- Lagos to jail Hawkers and buyers from 1, July

The Lagos State Government on Friday said that from July 1, 2016, it would commence a total enforcement against street trading and street hawkers, saying that the law banning their activities across the metropolis would take its full course.
Speaking at a live interview session on Television Continental, the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode said that the renewed enforcement is in line with Section One of the Lagos State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003 which restricts street trading and hawking in the metropolis.
The Governor, while sympathising with the family of a street hawker who was knocked down by an articulated truck while trying to evade arrest from officials of Kick Against Indiscipline along Maryland Bus stop on Wednesday, regretted that the situation led to the destruction of public assets.
“It is not in our DNA to allow someone to just die by road accident or the way it happened in respect of the incident. But beyond the fact that we lost one person while crossing the road as a result of evading arrest by KAI officials, I need to tell Lagosians that over 49 buses were actually destroyed and it is costing us like almost N139m to put those buses back on the road,” he said.
Consequently, Governor Ambode said the State Executive Council has resolved to enforce the Law, which according to him makes both the hawker and the buyer liable of the offence.
“The issue is we need to enforce our laws because we already have a law in respect of that and then there is a clause in it which says the buyer and the seller are both liable and that we are going to fine them either N90, 000 or a six month jail term.
“What we are doing on traffic is that we are introducing new strategies to eliminate traffic, but Lagos being a cosmopolitan city, you cannot totally eliminate it but now this is the case, in the next few days, you will see on the street of Lagos signs that will be warning you that buyers and hawkers should be aware that there are consequences,” Governor Ambode said.

Beyonce headlines sell-out UK gig to promote gender equality

U.S. singer Beyonce performed a set full of female anthems on Saturday at a London concert to raise funds for women’s health, education and justice.

The concert, which organizers hoped would reach a billion viewers, was staged by Chime For Change, a charity started by Italian fashion house Gucci which crowdfunds donations for projects to advance gender equality in more than 70 countries.
The “If I Were A Boy” singer was joined on stage by husband and rapper Jay-Z for “Crazy In Love”, but sang stirring anthems of female empowerment for which she is best known alone.
She told the audience that the charity gig had already raised $4 million dollars, and urged them to go online and do more during a set lasting 40 minutes that also included short films about women’s issues starring Beyonce.
Performances from Florence + The Machine, John Legend and Jennifer Lopez with a surprise duet with Mary J Blige, entertained the audience of more than 50,000 at Twickenham stadium, west London.
Beyonce walked on stage wearing a black leather body suit with sequin shoulders as the crowds chanted her name, and an all-female troupe of violinists played the opening chords of “A Change Is Gonna Come”.
Tearful but smiling, she then sang “At Last”, originally by Etta James, and pleased a dancing crowd with an energetic performance of “Run The World (Girls)”.
The Song For Change concert was broadcast live to 150 countries, and on primetime TV in the United States the following day, organizers said.
Promoting gender equality and empowering women is one of the eight goals set out by the United Nations at the turn of the millennium, yet inequality remains with just 21 percent of seats in national parliaments held by women, according to the Chime For Change website.
Leading human rights activist and anti-apartheid campaigner Desmond Tutu appeared in a video message and called for men to stand up for girls and women.
“This is the time for a revolution for women and girls,” the 81-year-old said. “And we each must play a part. Empowering girls and women is the challenge of our time.”

Artists including Jessie J, HAIM, Iggy Azalea, Legend, Rita Ora and Timbaland all performed, but Beyonce was the big attraction for performers and fans alike.

Possible terror attacks during this Eid-el-fitr

The Department of State Services (DSS) has alerted Nigerians on the need to look out for suspicious packages and strange persons within their communities ahead of and during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
The agency raised the concern on Friday in a statement by its spokesman, Mr Tony Opuiyo.
Mr Opuiyo confirmed that the DSS had been availed of intelligence suggesting possible terror attacks by militants on selected locations across Nigeria.
He said some locations of interest that could be targeted include parks and places of worship.
The DSS spokesman affirmed the agency’s commitment to adopting strategies aimed at ensuring the security and safety of all law-abiding residents and citizens.
He advised members of the public to be security conscious and report suspicious persons or activities to relevant security operatives.
The agency also highlighted the arrest of a group of suspected kidnappers in June among other criminal gangs that were nabbed.
“On 7th June, 2016, one Kabiru Shuaibu, the ring-leader of a kidnap gang, comprising his accomplices namely: Haruna Saleh, Tukur Shuaibu and Abdulmumuni Adamuna, were arrested by the Service along Murtala Muhammad Bridge, along Lokoja-Abuja Highway, in Lokoja, Kogi State.
“The suspects were part of a criminal gang which has been terrorising innocent citizens in the northern region of the Federation.
“During their arrest, a locally-made pistol, seven (7) cartridges, fourteen (14) mobile phones and six hundred and fifteen thousand Naira (615,000 Naira) were recovered on them,” the DSS noted.
